ABOUT RADIO BILINGÜE
Radio Bilingüe is the leading public radio producer and broadcaster serving Latino and Indigenous farmworkers and other low-wage essential workers in the U.S. The Fresno-based network owns and operates 29 FM public radio stations in California, Colorado, Arizona, New Mexico, Texas and Oregon, and a national Spanish language news and information service used by more than 75 additional affiliates across the U.S. With our award-winning music, news and public affairs programming and creative educational radio campaigns, Radio Bilingüe informs and engages traditionally underserved Spanish-, Mixteco- and English-speaking listeners on issues such as immigration rights, health and mental health, environmental justice, worker rights and safety, civic engagement and disaster preparedness.
 
SUMMARY OF POSITION
Radio Bilingüe seeks a Managing Producer for National News to oversee and manage the production of its national news programming, with a particular focus on states and communities reached by Radio Bilingüe’s broadcast service. This position will report to and work closely with Radio Bilingüe’s Director of National News and Information, Samuel Orozco, and is an exempt, management-level position.
 
The Managing Producer for National News will manage the production of daily and weekly news reports, features, talk shows, roundtables and public forums on health care, climate change, labor and employment, education, immigration, the arts, social justice, civic participation and additional topics relevant to Radio Bilingüe’s audience.
 
The ideal candidate will share Radio Bilingüe’s passion for Latino-controlled independent non-commercial media and elevating Latino concerns and voices. They will elevate Radio Bilingüe’s community-empowerment mission and journalistic style, which encourages broad civic participation in the democratic process.
 
DUTIES
  • Supervise and mentor news production personnel—including the sound engineer, producer, program hosts, web editors and administrative assistant—to produce network-distributed news/public affairs programming.
  • Oversee news personnel to ensure coverage of issues of interest, book guests, coordinate reporter assignments, schedule programming, produce and schedule pre-recorded interviews, conduct research, edit and copywrite content, and conduct post-production activities.
  • Participate in and/or facilitate regular editorial, advisory committee and strategy meetings.
  • Ensure news content aligns with Radio Bilingüe’s mission, editorial policies, and style of journalism to foster active civic engagement in the democratic, public decision-making process.
  • Edit web articles and news content for quality, accuracy, and adherence to editorial policies.  
  • Monitor news and public affairs programming to ensure high standards of quality.
  • Network with other public media outlets and ensure proper capture, recording and broadcast of news services acquired from partnering organizations.
  • Identify and collaborate with media, nonprofit and community-based, advocacy and other potential partners to deliver relevant news and information to Radio Bilingue’s listeners.  
  • Assume responsibility for the administrative functions of the national news department, including coordinating the filing of expenditures, acquisitions, records related to programming content and news sources; reports and purchase request forms from the sound engineer and news office administrator; and monthly check request reports for news content acquisitions.
  • Oversee freelance correspondents. Train incoming reporters on Radio Bilingüe’s newsroom stylebook and editorial policies. Maintain communication with regular commentators and news partner station managers. Participate in the screening process for freelance news job applicants as needed.
  • Supervise news interns as needed.
  • Maintain communication with selected news sources as needed.
  • Ensure compliance with grant contracts by preparing monthly news production reports for the Development and Business departments.
  • Participate in meetings with the Development Department and senior leadership to plan fundraising initiatives.
  • Participate in staff and management meetings to coordinate organizational activities.
  • Serve as a substitute news producer or reporter for the shows Línea Abierta, Despacho de Noticiero Latino and Edición Semanaria, as needed.
  • Maintain communication with affiliate stations and other content users, including crafting and releasing weekly program announcements via web, email, and social media.
  • Participate in on-air fundraising activities.
  • Represent Radio Bilingüe at public conferences and events.
  • Adjust work schedule to accommodate breaking news, special programs, and other needs of the news cycle.
 
QUALIFICATIONS
  • Ten years of experience (may be a combination of education and hands-on experience) in news reporting and production. Broadcast news and management experience preferred.
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish, with excellent written and verbal communication skills in both languages
  • Excellent project and team management skills
  • Excellent internal and external communication skills
  • Excellent facilitation and interpersonal skills
  • Skilled in audio production and radio broadcast
  • Ability to work independently, work under pressure with tight deadlines and handle multiple deadlines and priorities effectively
  • A clear understanding of and commitment to public/community radio mission, vision and culture.
  • Passionate and knowledgeable about news and current events
  • Knowledge of federal rules and regulations relating to public radio broadcasting.
 
SALARY/BENEFITS
The compensation for this position is $70,000 to $75,000, commensurate with qualifications and experience. This is a regular, full-time position that requires flexible scheduling for occasional work on weekends or evenings. WORK LOCATION
This position offers the opportunity to work physically at Radio Bilingüe’s headquarters in Fresno, California, or remotely for qualified candidates based in other locales who have demonstrated strong remote working skills. This position may require occasional travel depending on organizational needs.
