Job Description:
Salon is a spirited home for journalism that takes a critical look at current events, seeks alternatives to the status quo, engages with big ideas and holds power to account. Embracing a wide range of liberal and progressive views, we cover the arts and culture with rigor and insight, champion social progress and, with our digital community, lead good-faith debates about the stuff that really matters. We question authority and assumptions, starting with our own. One of the first entirely digital major media outlets, Salon’s award-winning journalism has driven the national conversation since 1995. In 2023, Salon joined the
Find.co portfolio of media sites.
We are seeking a passionate and deeply experienced Senior Editor to join our brand-new Ideas team. This is a rare opportunity to join Salon in a newly created position that will not only lead but also reimagine opinion coverage for our audience of more than 10 million monthly unique visitors. Be excited to flex your creativity, as well as shape the editorial future of the brand.
In this role, you will be the editor of our national affairs, politics and other newsy commentary, overseeing coverage that takes a critical look at current events and trends, both how we got here as a society and where we’re going next. As a leader for the expression of perspectives, big and small, you will set the editorial vision for the exchange of ideas on-site and across our multi-platform channels.
The ideal candidate is a seasoned journalist who has experience editing senior writers with distinct voices and a point of view. A proven track record of producing engaging arguments that connect with diverse audiences is required, plus rigorous training in journalism ethics and fact-checking, as you will be a leader in maintaining Salon’s strict editorial standards. A roster of freelance writers with experience in commentary writing is also a plus.
Responsibilities
- Enlighten, engage and entertain readers through the production of compelling, voice-driven commentary
- Consistently assign, edit and publish successful stories on current events in a variety of forms from both staff writers and outside voices
- Collaborate with a dynamic editorial team, setting deadlines for writers and clearly communicating expectations to them
- Cultivate and maintain professional relationships with a network of potential staff and writers, as well as high-quality relevant sources and their representatives
Additional Information
- Full-time salaried position: $81,000 - $90,000, based on experience
- Full benefits package, including unlimited PTO
- The position is covered under Salon’s Writers Guild of America, East, Collective Bargaining Agreement
- This is a remote position, but you must be legally able to work in the U.S.
- Regular Monday-Friday schedule, with occasional evening/weekend work as needed to cover breaking news
