Commonweal's mission is to provide a forum for civil, reasoned debate on the interaction of faith with contemporary politics and culture.
Read by a passionate audience of educated, committed Catholics, as well as readers from many other faith traditions, Commonweal presents well-argued, respectful points of view from across the ideological spectrum. Charity, depth, and honesty are Commonweal’s watchwords. We believe that the challenging problems of the present and debates about the future need breathing room—articulated not in slogans or hot takes but addressed civilly, fairly, and at length when necessary, and always accessible to the general reader.
Founded in 1924, today Commonweal publishes both in print (11 times yearly) and via a continuously updated website. In addition, Commonweal Local Communities, in-person discussion groups centered on Commonweal-related topics, now meet monthly in fifty cities around the United States. We also organize discussions and workshops for younger readers and aspiring young writers; we reach several hundred university campuses with student subscriptions; and we regularly sponsor live panel discussions on compelling issues of the moment. In the past year, we launched the Commonweal Podcast, an opportunity for a new generation of readers to engage with our editors and writers in yet another medium.
Commonweal has a full-time staff of 13, and our office is located on the Upper West Side of Manhattan in New York City.
