Job Description

Associate Editor | Starting salary: $75K

Open Campus is hiring a bilingual associate editor to strengthen our growing network of local reporters and expand our capacity to serve Spanish-speaking communities across the United States.

Higher ed is a local story and it shapes the future of every community. To cover it that way, Open Campus adds dedicated reporters to newsrooms across the country who examine how colleges are shaping local economies, career pathways, and the livelihoods of the people who live nearby.

The Open Campus Local Network includes 17 partner newsrooms. Every week our editors seed and support in-depth stories and expert beat coverage in those local markets, brainstorming story ideas, doing big-picture edits, coaching reporters, analyzing data, and providing national sources and context.

In this job, you’ll support that work and help us develop new resources, tools, and products to better serve local audiences, with a special focus on improving our ability to serve Spanish-speaking communities.

Your main responsibilities will include:
  • Serving as the point person for several of our newsroom partners, including those that primarily serve Spanish-speaking populations
  • Connecting Open Campus and its 17 partner newsrooms more directly to Spanish-speaking audiences, particularly in states like Texas and California
  • Providing editorial guidance to local higher ed reporters, including:
    — Story coaching and editing
    — Idea brainstorming
    — Data analysis support
    — Expert sourcing
  • Ensuring high-quality Spanish translations of community outreach materials and reporter tools

We’re based in Washington, D.C., but you may work from anywhere in the United States.

Here’s what we’re looking for in an associate editor:
  • A bilingual journalist (Spanish and English) with strong editing and translation skills
  • A collaborator whose strengths lie in working with people, guiding, supporting, and inspiring them
  • A journalist with experience untangling complex policies and communicating clearly about why they matter
  • An organizer and problem solver skilled at creating structures and resources that improve journalistic work
  • Someone excited about our mission of expanding local news coverage and serving diverse communities

We are particularly interested in applicants who have experience in:

  • Working with Spanish-speaking communities
  • Developing audience-engagement strategies
  • Higher education reporting or editing

We know there are important skills we haven’t thought of or strong candidates who don’t have this exact background. If that’s you, don’t hesitate to apply and tell us more.

Open Campus is committed to building an inclusive culture that reflects the full diversity of the nation. We encourage members of traditionally underrepresented communities to apply, including people of color, LGBTQ people, and people with disabilities.

Benefits of working at Open Campus
  • 20 vacation days, plus sick leave and major holidays
  • Health insurance
  • Disability Insurance
  • Life Insurance
  • 401(k) with matching
  • Up to 6 months paid family leave
