Job Description

Join States Newsroom as Editor-in-Chief of the Michigan Advance and lead an award-winning team reporting on government, policy and politics for the Great Lakes State.

The Michigan Advance illuminates state government for Michiganders from Lake Superior to Lake Erie. The newsroom covers all the important issues: education, labor, health care, the environment, civil rights and, of course, politics. All Advance coverage is available to read or republish for free.

States Newsroom, the nation’s largest state-focused nonprofit news organization, is looking for an experienced journalist to serve as Editor-in-Chief of the Michigan Advance, and guide the team of three reporters as they connect what’s going on in the Capitol to what’s going on in people’s lives.

With an eye on critical government stories from Lansing, the Editor will oversee the talented team and a dynamic site, produce a daily newsletter, and continue to build the outlet’s social media presence. The Editor will also work closely with States Newsroom and network peers in other states to share best practices and build relationships that help refine the outlet’s operations.
