WMUK-FM seeks a general assignment
News Reporter to join our award-winning newsroom. The reporter will provide innovative and in-depth coverage serving listeners across the West Michigan region.
Overview WMUK-FM is public radio from Western Michigan University and a founding NPR member station. We are the Kalamazoo-based NPR affiliate for the West Michigan region. Situated halfway between Detroit and Chicago, our primary signal coverage area stretches across a large portion of southwest Michigan.
We're seeking candidates with at least one year of journalism experience. Our mission is to share knowledge, explore ideas and tell compelling stories that engage listeners and communities across Western Michigan and beyond. Our vision is to become the regional NPR station of choice for a growing community of public radio listeners and supporters.

Job Requirements
The reporter will pitch, report, write, and produce stories on general assignment. In a typical week they will file several spots, turning some the same day, and working the rest of the time on longer projects. The reporter will take photos and/or video in the field and post web versions of their stories.
Some of the reporter’s feature work will be investigative in nature. They will file records requests and gather data as needed.
The reporter will likely be called on to file occasional spots for NPR, with the option to also produce features. They will also serve a backup editor and trainer for other news staff, including interns, when the news director is not available, and occasionally write newscasts and fill in for live hosts on news magazines. They will also participate in on-air pitching during WMUK membership drives.
The reporter will ensure that all content they produce meets WMUK's journalistic standards for accuracy, fairness, and balance. They will incorporate diverse perspectives and voices into their stories.
Minimum Qualifications - Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution.
- One year's relevant experience.
- Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills.
- Strong organizational skills.
- Ability to travel.
Desired Qualifications
- Successful previous public radio reporting and audio digital editing experience.
- Capacity to understand issues relevant to the region.
- Experience creating sound-rich, meaningful features for a public radio station.
- Experience editing audio files with the most recent version of Adobe Audition.
