Job Description

Salon is a spirited home for journalism that takes a critical look at current events, seeks alternatives to the status quo, engages with big ideas, and holds power to account. Embracing a wide range of liberal and progressive views, we cover the arts and culture with rigor and insight, champion social progress, and, with our digital community, lead good-faith debates about the stuff that really matters. We question authority and assumptions, starting with our own. One of the first entirely digital major media outlets, Salon’s award-winning journalism has driven the national conversation since 1995. In 2023, Salon joined the Find.co portfolio of media sites.

We are seeking a passionate and deeply experienced Senior Staff Writer to join our Culture team. In this role, you will produce engaging original reporting, insightful analysis and thought-provoking criticism on cultural trends, especially as they pertain to our lives lived offscreen. Through in-depth, long-form stories, you will explore how culture shapes our world.

Salon’s culture journalism applies a critical lens, challenging the culture we consume by pushing past prevailing narratives, championing the marginalized and offering a side-eye to our everyday existence. We don't just uncover the why, but we also ask, "Why not this instead?" Through strong storytelling, we both entertain and we question. We aren’t afraid to get personal.

Salon’s Culture vertical is a place for voice: We produce stories with critical insight, subject matter expertise, and sophisticated flair. The ideal candidate has a distinct point of view, a sense of humor, and the ability to connect with diverse audiences. This role offers the opportunity to flex your creative, critical, and reporting skills in a collaborative, fast-paced environment. We welcome applicants with expertise in interdisciplinary subjects, such as the intersection of culture with food, health, money, and more.

Responsibilities

  • Write compelling, voice-driven reporting, analysis, and cultural commentary
  • Conduct interviews and produce original reporting on current and relevant cultural trends
  • Explore interdisciplinary connections between culture and broader societal issues
  • Collaborate with a dynamic editorial team while working independently to meet deadlines.
Additional Information:
  • Full-time salaried position: $76,000 - $85,000, based on experience
  • Full benefits package, including unlimited PTO
  • The position is covered under Salon’s Writers Guild of America, East, Collective Bargaining Agreement.
  • This is a remote position, but you must be legally able to work in the U.S.
  • Regular Monday-Friday schedule, with occasional evening/weekend work as needed for events coverage

Salon provides equal employment opportunities to all employees and applicants for employment and prohibits discrimination and harassment of any type without regard to race, ethnicity, creed, color, national origin, native language or dialect, sex, age, physical or mental disability, marital and/or parental status, family relationship, criminal record, socioeconomic status, DACA status, sexual orientation, religion, gender identity, gender expression, veteran status, Union activity, housing status, physical characteristics, past history of drug use, or any other factor protected by applicable law.

Job Requirements

  • 5+ years of journalism experience, with a deep specialization in cultural trend and feature writing
  • Strong, fast-paced writing skills for digital media, with familiarity with AP Style
  • Proficiency in journalism standards and best practices
  • Understanding of Salon’s voice and editorial mission
  • Proficiency in digital analytics tools like Chartbeat and experience with CMS platforms
  • Effective communication and time management skills
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent newsroom training
