Job Description

Salon is a spirited home for journalism that takes a critical look at current events, seeks alternatives to the status quo, engages with big ideas and holds power to account. Embracing a wide range of liberal and progressive views, we cover the arts and culture with rigor and insight, champion social progress and, with our digital community, lead good-faith debates about the stuff that really matters. We question authority and assumptions, starting with our own. One of the first entirely digital major media outlets, Salon’s award-winning journalism has driven the national conversation since 1995. In 2023, Salon joined the Find.co portfolio of media sites.

We are seeking a passionate and deeply experienced Senior Staff Writer to join our Science & Health team. In this role, you will report on the burgeoning self-care and wellness industries, both inside and outside the medical establishment and public health bureaucracies. You will produce engaging, original reporting and insightful analysis on health and wellness questions and how they shape our society as you explore innovative solutions and demystify what works, what doesn’t, and what is purely a scam. Your approach will be centered on human stories, evidence-base,d and open-minded.

Salon’s Science & Health vertical enlightens and engages readers. Our stories are beautiful and useful. The ideal candidate has a distinct voice, a healthy dose of skepticism, and the ability to connect with diverse audiences. This role offers the opportunity to flex your creative and reporting skills in a collaborative, fast-paced environment. We welcome applicants with expertise in interdisciplinary subjects, such as issues of power and how they define the struggle for a better future.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct evidence-based interviews and produce original reporting on the health and wellness industry
  • Enlighten, engage, and entertain readers with compelling, voice-driven stories

  • 5+ years of journalism experience, with a deep specialization in health and wellness trend and feature reporting
  • Strong, fast-paced writing skills for digital media, with familiarity with AP Style
  • Proficiency in journalism standards and best practices
  • Understanding of Salon’s voice and editorial mission
  • Proficiency in digital analytics tools like Chartbeat and experience with CMS platforms
  • Effective communication and time management skills
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent newsroom training
