Job Description

The Nova Institute’s Media Fellowship program supports outstanding print, digital, and/or broadcast journalists and nonprofit newsrooms reporting on the complex, intertwined factors that affect health and well-being. We view health as our most basic and essential asset, as well as a unifying lens through which we can transcend polarization. We focus on solutions-based approaches to today’s challenges and seek out stories that will unite us in a more holistic understanding of health and flourishing.

Media Fellows have full editorial control over their projects and conduct their work independently. They are encouraged to pursue creative new stories that are timely, comprehensive, and impactful. Nova Media Fellows have published their work in the New York Times, the Guardian, Science, Grist, Bloomberg, Eos, Knowable, Science Friday, and more.

In a changing media landscape where readers are increasingly getting their news from a variety of non-traditional sources, we encourage novel approaches to storytelling that will engage people where they are. Stories must be science-based and accurately report on pertinent ideas, questions, and debates. We embrace solutions-focused journalism while also seeking to combat mis- and dis-information, and we hope Media Fellows will aim to reach a range of audiences, including general news readerships, policymakers, scientists, business leaders, and/or local communities.

In 2025, Nova will support four exemplary proposals exploring health, well-being, and our ability to flourish and live a fulfilling life. We encourage projects that:

  • examine the many unique factors influencing children’s health and well-being;

  • connect mental health and emotional well-being to individual, community, and planetary health;

  • examine the political, social, and environmental dynamics leading to health inequities;

  • and/or projects that take a new transdisciplinary or intersectional approach.

Media Fellows receive an award of $60,000 over a 12-month period beginning in fall 2025, with an additional travel reimbursement. Proposals are due May 19, 2025.
