MinnPost is hiring a metro editor, a new newsroom leadership position that will manage and direct the reporters primarily covering the Twin Cities metro area.
MinnPost’s newsroom is growing by 50% in 2025, thanks to new investments, and we’re looking to expand coverage of the Twin Cities and grow audiences interested in coverage of local government, the economy, health, housing and urban development, transportation, the environment and more. We’re looking for an editor who can push for both quick-turn and longer-term ambitious and explanatory reporting that has impact.
In addition to coaching and developing reporters, the metro editor will work closely with the deputy editor and audience editor to plan and execute day-to-day coverage in ways that will reach and engage more Twin Cities metro residents through new editorial products and on the platforms our target audiences frequent.
We’re looking for someone who is entrepreneurial, a great leader, collaborator and communicator, and is driven by our shared belief that rigorous, in-depth journalism that inspires and engages communities across the state is crucial to a strong democracy.
Relevant skills and qualifications:
5+ years of journalism experience in a digital media environment
Experience leading teams or projects
Ability to multitask and work toward both short-term and long-term deadlines
Excellent news judgment and the ability to guide and develop reporters toward audience growth and impact goals
Strong editing, writing and story assigning skills
Strong organizational and communication skills and a track record of managing long-term projects
Experience covering local government
Data literacy
Experience in WordPress or similar content management systems
Familiarity with content analytics, especially Google Analytics and Parse.ly, and SEO experience

Job Requirements
In this role, you will:
Supervise, coach, and develop story ideas with reporters covering the metro and a newsroom reporting fellow covering race and health equity
Edit some freelance copy
Work closely with the audience team to maximize the reach and impact of MinnPost’s journalism through robust planning for strong story presentation and visuals, distribution and audience and community engagement
Contribute to the newsroom’s leadership team to cultivate an inclusive and collaborative editorial and organizational culture that ensures our newsroom and coverage reflect the diversity of Minnesota
Fill-in on occasion to direct the newsroom’s day-to-day operations, including updating and maintaining the editorial calendar and collaboration between editor-reporter teams and the audience team
Represent MinnPost at various live events, including moderating panel discussions or speaking to organizations, university classes, etc.
