Job Description

The Atlantic is seeking an assistant editor to join the newsroom. This role will be assigned to the National Security team.

Assistant editors are integral members of the newsroom at every phase of work, from generating ideas to bringing The Atlantic’s journalism to life. They work closely with senior editors to keep the editorial wheels turning, with responsibilities that include—but aren’t limited to—fact-checking, story research, reporting, participating in editorial meetings, and preparing edited work for publication online. The job may have occasional opportunities for writing. It will include night, early-morning, and weekend work.

Candidates should be highly organized and motivated, with strong attention to detail and high standards for accuracy. The ideal candidate will be creative, conscientious, and highly adaptable. Impeccable judgment is a must. This editor will be expected to collaborate regularly with colleagues across the newsroom.

Qualifications of the ideal candidate include:

  • At least two years of experience in journalism, publishing, or a related field. (School experience can count.)
  • Strong research skills, including finding contact information for potential sources, reading court records, navigating government databases, searching social media platforms, and using spreadsheets to organize reporting.
  • Curiosity about the news of the day, and a deep interest in U.S. national security, foreign policy and defense.
  • Excellent writing and editing skills.
  • The ability to manage time, communicate clearly, and quickly accomplish assignments in a fast-paced news environment.
  • Critical thinking, attention to process, and a love for magazine journalism.

This role will be based in Washington, D.C.

Annual compensation minimum: $69,000

Annual compensation maximum: $75,000

This is a Guild position.
