Position Summary
The communications associate supports communications managers in promoting research by the Center's research teams to the news media, the engaged public and key stakeholders.

The communications associate supports all aspects of external relations, playing a major supporting role in promotion and dissemination of findings through media relations, stakeholder engagement, event planning, and social media outreach, all while demonstrating innovative thinking and an entrepreneurial spirit. The communications associate has a hunger for traditional communications/public relations work, but also has their finger on the pulse of what's new and coming next in the communications and marketing landscape. The ideal candidate is skilled in project management while also demonstrating strategic thinking. The position is a member of the communications team who will work closely with other communication strategists, schedulers and various team leaders.

Primary Responsibilities
 
  • Serves as initial point of contact for external inquiries, especially media; responds to incoming requests promptly, accurately and efficiently. Coordinates logistics for interviews and presentations for experts and other staff as appropriate.
  • Following the guidance of communications leadership, uses creative means to reach out to stakeholders.
  • Creates, updates and maintains lists of media and other key contacts, expanding and diversifying our potential target audiences.
  • Assists in developing outreach plans for priority publications, events and platforms and may support implementation.
  • In conjunction with Research team and under guidance of managers, writes and plans content for team social accounts.
  • Puts together topical newsletters and other content packages for both research teams.
  • Under the guidance of communications managers, executes the Center's strategies for various heritage months.
  • Stays up-to-date with current events and key conversations relevant to the associated research areas.
  • Tracks and documents the results of outreach activities to demonstrate and summarize audience impact for institutional reporting purposes. Identifies themes and opportunities for follow-on visibility and proactive moments.
  • Supports managers in outreach for product releases.


Knowledge and Skill Requirements
 
  • Demonstrated interest in research topics, news, and current events.
  • Must demonstrate both a hunger for traditional media/public relations skills and the ability to keep up with new trends in communications and marketing.
  • Superior writing, editing, and organizational skills including knowledge of AP style.
  • Excellent verbal and interpersonal and relationship management skills and client-service orientation.
  • Experience or interest in crafting social media content, building newsletters or project managing other digital products.
  • Ability to balance multiple time-sensitive priorities and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to work well both independently and in team-oriented environment.
  • Attention to detail and precision in communicating about data/numbers.
  • Excellent judgment and organizational skills.
  • Must be able to think strategically and execute tactically.
  • Must be entrepreneurial, taking initiative and being proactive.


Education/Training/Experience
 
  • Bachelor's degree required; communications, journalism, English, or related degree preferred.
  • 3-5 years of relevant experience in external relations, including media relations or marketing.
  • Knowledge of Washington and press corps and public policy community.
  • Experience with promoting content through social media and other digital channels.
  • Proficiency with media outreach/tracking tools like Meltwater, Cision or Leadership Directories.
  • Experience managing and using Salesforce or similar contact databases.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office (especially Word, Excel, PowerPoint).


FLSA Status: Exempt

This position typically starts at $70,000 per year.

Location

Pew Research Center staff may work virtually from remote locations up to three days in a standard work week. Staff are required to be present in the Center's Washington, D.C. office on two core days weekly (Tues. and Wed.).
