Job Description

The Department of American Studies/Media and Communications at State University of New York at Old Westbury is seeking applications for a full-time Assistant Professor starting in Fall 2025.  We seek candidates in the field of Digital Journalism with expertise in one or more of the following areas: multiplatform production; investigative reporting; visual journalism; data/sensor journalism; immersive storytelling; broadcast; community and/or social justice journalism; public relations; and/or strategic communications. Ideal candidates will have professional experience in a contemporary newsroom and/or digital media environment, as well as a strong foundation in journalistic ethics and best practices. A record of early adoption and creative implementation of new technologies is a plus. As part of a multidisciplinary department grounded in social justice, the ideal candidate will also have journalistic experience addressing issues of gender, race/ethnicity, immigration, disability, LGBTQIA+, class, or other historically underrepresented communities. Responsibilities include teaching foundation courses (Multimedia Journalism, Writing for Media and/or Investigative Reporting), as well as advanced courses related to area(s) of expertise. Professional responsibilities include consistently good teaching, ongoing successful journalistic/creative output, student advisement, and service. Service includes support of student media outlets while mentoring students as they create multiplatform portfolios and secure related internships in journalism/media. Experience teaching an ethnically diverse, working student body preferred. 

The Department of American Studies/Media and Communications houses a B.A. in Media and Communications, a B.A. in American Studies, and a B.A. in Black Studies.  We also offer content courses in our School of Education's Master of Arts in Teaching degree and in the interdisciplinary Master of Liberal Studies degree.  


Job Requirements

Minimum Requirements:  

  • A Master's in Journalism, MFA or terminal degree in media or a related field.
  • Expertise in one or more of the following areas: multiplatform nonfiction media production; investigative reporting; visual journalism; data/sensor journalism; immersive storytelling; broadcast; community and/or social justice journalism; public relations; and/or strategic communications. 

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Previous experience teaching at the college level.  
  • Experience teaching or mentoring an ethnically diverse, working student population.  
  • A record of professional media production or journalistic work in a contemporary and/or digital nonfiction media environment. in a contemporary newsroom and/or digital nonfiction media environment.  
  • Journalistic experience addressing issues of gender, race/ethnicity, immigration, disability, LGBTQIA+, class, or other historically underrepresented communities.  
  • Experience in student or community media.
