Job Description

Faculty Reporter
Hybrid - Washington DC
SALARY: $60,000-$70,000 DOE

Join the leading newsroom covering US higher education.

Inside Higher Ed, the go-to source for news, analysis and commentary on higher education, is looking for a sharp, ambitious reporter to join our team.

As colleges adapt to funding challenges, declining public trust and attacks from state and federal lawmakers, there’s never been a more exciting time to cover higher education. We’re seeking a journalist with a passion for news—someone who can write stories that are both authoritative and distinctive, bringing clarity and insight to complex topics and fast-changing issues. The ideal candidate will have experience covering the world of higher ed faculty and issues related to it including contingent faculty, tenure policies, academic freedom, labor and unionization and teaching, either for a local or national publication.

We’re looking for someone who:

  • Is a curious, accurate reporter who understands the different facets of higher education.
  • Understands the sub-themes of the higher ed faculty beat and what they mean for individuals in these positions as well as for the institutions where they work.
  • Can juggle daily coverage with occasional enterprise work.
  • Knows how to develop a beat and build relationships with sources in order to break stories.
  • Has worked in a local or national newsroom for at least 3 years.
  • Writes with voice and authority without sacrificing nuance or context.
  • Doesn’t just report the news but also helps our readers understand why it matters.
  • Is eager to pitch fresh story ideas and dig into underreported angles.
  • Is comfortable representing Inside Higher Ed in the media and speaking at industry events.
  • Is a team player and brings a collaborative spirit to our newsroom.

Responsibilities:

  • Cover major developments in the people, policies and practices impacting higher education faculty.
  • Report enterprise stories that get under the surface and challenge assumptions.
  • File smart, clean copy on deadline multiple times a week covering different formats from short Quick Takes to explainers to enterprise news stories.
  • Develop a beat, cultivate sources and spot trends early.
  • Help shape the national conversation on the challenges and opportunities facing colleges today.
  • Thrive in an often-fast paced newsroom covering stories that can turn on a dime.

Why work with us?

Inside Higher Ed is the most trusted newsroom in higher ed, reaching millions of readers each month that represent the broad spectrum of the higher education from community colleges and minority-serving institutions to private non-profits, large publics and third-party service providers. Our journalism covers the breadth of the sector, digging into state-level politics, institutional finances and developments in educational technology as well as issues that affect students, faculty and campus leaders.

Our journalists are recognized across the sector for writing thorough stories with integrity, depth and impact. You’ll join a collaborative, mission-driven team that believes in thoughtful journalism, editorial independence, and the power of higher education to change lives.

What are some of IHE’s benefits and perks?

  • Competitive & comprehensive health, dental, and vision benefit packages
  • 401(k) matching
  • Hybrid working options for employees
  • Telehealth services (mental and physical wellness)
  • Cell phone service and commuter expense reimbursement
  • Office centrally located in downtown Washington D.C.
  • Fitness center

This is a full-time position based in Washington, D.C. This job is covered under the terms of a collective bargaining agreement with the Washington-Baltimore News Guild, more information at wbng.org.
